Founded by providers, for providers

Transforming healthcare staffing through experience and innovation.

Our Story

A journey from a South African village to revolutionizing North American healthcare

I grew up in a small South African town, four hours from Johannesburg, where life felt gritty and real. One day, a Zulu person came to visit, and through them, I discovered the warmth and resilience of the Zulu people, which shaped me and showed me the power of our shared humanity.

Fast forward to my college years, I had the chance to dive deeper, spending time in a Zulu village on a medical mission trip—sharing meals, swapping stories, and laughing together. Their ubuntu philosophy, “I am because we are,” hit me hard. It was a truth that stood strong, even against the weight of apartheid. That sense of community over self? It’s who I am now.

After college, I headed to medical school in the U.S. and became a locum tenens provider, working in chaotic city ERs as an internal medicine hospitalist. The job was grueling—sleepless nights, patients I couldn’t save, and watching colleagues and systems crumble under pressure. But those lessons from the Zulu village stayed with me: healing doesn’t happen alone. It takes a team.

Meet Our Founder

From South African villages to North American healthcare transformation

Dr. Shivam Kalan

That's why I started Zulu Locums. It's not just a business—it's personal. I named it "Zulu" to honor the people whose strength and care built lasting communities. My goal is to bring that same spirit to healthcare, to make it human again.

"We send physicians, ARNPs, CRNAs, and PAs—providers with heart and grit—to hospitals that need them, ready to step in wherever they're called."

The Ubuntu Philosophy: “I am because we are” – this truth from the Zulu village became the foundation of everything we do. Healing doesn’t happen alone. It takes a team, and that’s the spirit we bring to every healthcare facility we serve.

Bringing the spirit of “I am because we are” to healthcare staffing

Our Mission

To bring the Ubuntu spirit to healthcare staffing, restoring humanity to healing. We connect providers with heart and grit to hospitals in need, transforming chaos into care. Guided by the belief that healing thrives in community, we build bridges that uplift both caregivers and those they serve.

Our Vision

Zulu Locums redefines healthcare staffing through a value-based model, connecting dedicated, vetted providers with hospitals to deliver high-quality care and superior patient outcomes. By prioritizing excellence, cost-efficiency, and thriving communities, we transform staffing into a catalyst for healing and sustainable healthcare systems worldwide.

Ubuntu:

“I am because we are”

This philosophy from the Zulu people teaches us that our humanity is interconnected. In healthcare, this means no one heals alone—it takes a team, a community, and shared commitment to transform lives.
